What does the Klaviyo integration do?

When an affiliate is approved for the first time, the plugin creates a profile for the affiliate in your Klaviyo account, or updates the profile if one with the same email address already exists, and adds the profile to the list you choose. The profile contains the email address, the first name, the last name and the properties you map.

When is the profile created in Klaviyo?

Only when an affiliate is approved for the first time. Affiliates who are pending or declined are not sent to Klaviyo, and affiliates who were approved before the plugin was activated are not added automatically. The plugin also needs the private API key and the list ID, otherwise it does nothing.

Does the plugin subscribe affiliates to email marketing?

No. The plugin adds the profile to a list, but it does not record consent to email or SMS marketing. According to Klaviyo, a profile added to a list through the API keeps the consent status 'never subscribed'. If you want to send marketing messages to your affiliates, make sure they give consent in a way Klaviyo accepts, for example through a Klaviyo signup form.

Which API key permissions does the plugin need?

A Klaviyo private API key with read and write access to Profiles and to Lists. Klaviyo does not let you change the permissions of a key later, so if the permissions are wrong you have to create a new key.

Are affiliate changes and deletions synchronized?

No. The plugin sends the affiliate once, at first approval. Editing or deleting the affiliate in Post Affiliate Pro later does not change or remove the profile in Klaviyo, and Klaviyo profiles do not become affiliates.

Klaviyo integration

Klaviyo is a marketing platform for email, SMS and other messages, built mainly for e-commerce and consumer brands. The Post Affiliate Pro plugin connects it to your affiliate program, so every affiliate you approve becomes a profile in Klaviyo and lands on the list you choose, without any manual export or import.

The plugin works at one moment in an affiliate’s life:

Approved for the first time: a profile with the affiliate’s email address, first name and last name is created in Klaviyo, together with the properties you chose to send, and added to your list. If a profile with that email address already exists, it is updated instead.

NOTE: The synchronization runs one way, from Post Affiliate Pro to Klaviyo, and only once per affiliate. Later edits or deletions of the affiliate are not sent, and Klaviyo profiles are not turned into affiliates.

IMPORTANT: Adding a profile to a list is not the same as subscribing it to marketing in Klaviyo. The plugin does not record consent, and Klaviyo keeps the consent status of such a profile as “never subscribed”. Make sure your affiliates give consent in a way Klaviyo accepts before you send them marketing messages.

How to integrate Post Affiliate Pro with Klaviyo

Create a private API key

In Klaviyo open your account Settings, choose API keys and click Create Private API Key in the Private API Keys section. Only users with the Owner, Admin or Manager role can create keys. Give the key a name and choose the custom key option, then give it these permissions:

Profiles: read and write.
Lists: read and write.

Klaviyo shows the key only once, so copy it and keep it safe. The permissions of a key cannot be changed after it is created, so if you choose the wrong ones, create a new key.

Find the ID of your list

Create a list for your affiliates in Klaviyo, or choose an existing one. Open Lists & Segments, open the list, and go to its Settings tab. The list ID is shown near the top of the page, and you can also see it in the address of the list.

Activate the plugin

In your merchant panel navigate to Configuration > Plugins > Klaviyo Synchronization > Activate. Then fill in the configuration:

Private API Key: the key you created.
List ID: the ID of the list that should store your affiliates.
Send more affiliate details: lets you send more of the affiliate’s data as properties of the Klaviyo profile, see below.

The plugin does nothing until the private API key and the list ID are filled in.

Send more affiliate details as properties

By default the plugin sends the email address, the first name and the last name. To send more, enable Send more affiliate details. The plugin then lists every field of the affiliate profile, including your own signup form fields, as Profile field: name of the field. Next to each field you want to send, enter the name of the Klaviyo property that should receive its value. Leave a field empty to skip it. The name, first name, last name and photo fields are not offered. The first and last name are sent in any case.

Test the integration

Approve a test affiliate and check that the profile appears in Klaviyo, on your list, with the properties you chose.

How does the plugin work exactly?

When an affiliate is approved for the first time, either by you or automatically under your affiliate approval settings, the plugin makes two calls to the Klaviyo API:

It creates or updates the profile with the email address, the first name, the last name and the mapped properties. If a profile with the same email address already exists in Klaviyo, its data is updated with these values.
It adds the profile to your list. This step is skipped when the first call fails, for example because of a wrong API key.

Problems are written to the log of the plugin and do not stop the approval of the affiliate. Only affiliates who are approved are sent. Affiliates who were approved before you activated the plugin are not added automatically.

Use case: segments and flows for affiliates

Say you add a question to your signup form, for example how the affiliate plans to promote you, and map that field to a Klaviyo property. Every approved affiliate then arrives on your affiliate list with that property filled in, so you can build Klaviyo segments such as bloggers and social media creators and give each its own onboarding flow.

Keep the consent note above in mind. Before you send marketing messages to the list, collect consent from your affiliates, for example with a Klaviyo signup form. Use Klaviyo for this kind of nurturing, and keep the email templates built into Post Affiliate Pro for transactional messages such as commission and payout notices.
