Mailjet Integration EmailMarketing AffiliateMarketing

Mailjet integration

Mailjet is an email platform for marketing campaigns and for sending email from your applications. The Post Affiliate Pro plugin connects it to your affiliate program, so every affiliate you approve becomes a contact on your Mailjet contact list without any manual export or import.

The plugin works at one moment in an affiliate’s life:

  • Approved for the first time: a contact with the affiliate’s name and email address is created in Mailjet and added to the contact list you chose.

NOTE: The synchronization runs one way, from Post Affiliate Pro to Mailjet, and only once per affiliate. Later edits or deletions of the affiliate are not sent, and Mailjet contacts are not turned into affiliates.

How to integrate Post Affiliate Pro with Mailjet

Get your Mailjet API credentials

Log in to Mailjet, open the menu with your account name and choose Account settings. In the REST API section open API Key Management and copy your API key and secret key. Mailjet shows the secret key when you generate it, so save it in a safe place.

Find the ID of your contact list

Create the contact list for your affiliates in Mailjet, or choose an existing one. The plugin needs the numeric ID of the list, not its name. Mailjet’s API returns your contact lists, so you can look the ID up with this command in a terminal, using your API key and secret key:

curl -u YOUR_API_KEY:YOUR_SECRET_KEY https://api.mailjet.com/v3/REST/contactslist

Find your list in the answer and note its ID.

Activate the plugin

In your merchant panel navigate to Configuration > Plugins > Mailjet > Activate. Then fill in the configuration:

  • API username: your Mailjet API key.
  • API password: your Mailjet secret key.
  • Contact List ID: the numeric ID of the list that new affiliates should be added to.

Save the configuration. The plugin does nothing until the API username and password are filled in.

Test the integration

Approve a test affiliate and check that the contact appears in Mailjet and on your contact list. If it does not, check that the API key, the secret key and the list ID are correct.

How does the plugin work exactly?

When an affiliate is approved for the first time, either by you or automatically under your affiliate approval settings, the plugin makes two calls to the Mailjet API:

  1. It creates a contact with the name of the affiliate (first and last name in one name field) and the email address. The contact is allowed to receive your campaigns.
  2. It adds the contact to your list using the email address and the list ID. The contact is added as subscribed. This step is skipped if you did not enter a list ID.

If one of the calls fails, for example because the contact already exists in Mailjet, the plugin writes the error to its log and goes on to the next step. A failure never stops the approval of the affiliate. Affiliates who are still pending or were declined are never sent to Mailjet.

Use case: an affiliate newsletter

Say you want to tell your affiliates about new banners, higher commissions and seasonal promotions every month. Without the integration, someone has to copy the email address of each new affiliate into Mailjet by hand, and a few always get missed.

With the plugin activated, every approved affiliate arrives on your affiliate list on their own. You write one newsletter in Mailjet and send it to the whole list, and new affiliates start receiving it from the day they are approved.

Use Mailjet for newsletters like this, and keep the email templates and notifications built into Post Affiliate Pro for transactional messages such as commission and payout notices.

What is Mailjet?

Mailjet is an email marketing and email API platform. It describes itself as email marketing software built for developers and loved by marketers, and says it is used by more than 100,000 customers. It handles both marketing emails and transactional emails, through its editor and through an email API and SMTP relay.

For affiliate managers, a contact list is the useful part. You keep your affiliates in their own list, separate from customers, and send them the messages that fit them.

Key features of Mailjet

  • Email editor: a drag-and-drop editor with a template library and landing pages.
  • Segmentation and automation: segment your contacts and run automation workflows.
  • A/B testing: test versions of your campaigns.
  • Email API and SMTP relay: send marketing and transactional email from your own applications.
  • Deliverability tools: email previews, address validation and domain authentication.
  • Collaboration: real-time collaboration, approval flows and subaccounts.
  • Analytics and webhooks: real-time analytics and webhooks.

Mailjet pricing options

At the time of writing, Mailjet lists a Free plan with 6,000 emails per month (up to 200 per day), and the paid plans Starter at $9, Essential at $19 and Premium at $29 per month, with higher email volumes and more features. A custom plan is available on request. Prices differ by billing and currency and change often, so check the current numbers on the Mailjet pricing page before you decide.

Alternatives to Mailjet

If Mailjet does not fit your needs, Post Affiliate Pro also integrates with other email marketing tools. See the guides for ActiveCampaign , Flodesk , MailChimp user synchronization and AWeber , or compare more email marketing tools.
