WooCommerce affiliate program launch checklist

WooCommerce AffiliateMarketing WordPress Checklist

Most WooCommerce affiliate programs fail for the same reason: someone installs a plugin, sends a handful of invites, and only then works out commission rates, payout timing, and what happens when an affiliate tries something shady. Work through this checklist before you announce anything, not after.

1. Pick and install your tracking plugin

Everything else on this list depends on this working correctly first. Your plugin needs to hook into WooCommerce’s own order data, not just count clicks, so commissions get calculated on actual completed sales rather than estimated traffic. Our comparison of the best WordPress affiliate plugins covers the main options if you haven’t chosen one yet.

Once it’s installed, test it yourself. Click your own affiliate link, complete a real purchase, and confirm the sale shows up correctly with the right amount and the right affiliate credited. Catching a tracking bug on a test order costs you nothing. Catching it after twenty affiliates have been driving traffic for a month costs you trust you don’t get back easily.

2. Decide your commission structure before you decide anything else

Pick this early because it shapes almost every decision after it. Consider:

  • Flat percentage per sale. Simple to explain, simple for affiliates to calculate their own earnings.
  • Tiered rates. Higher percentages for affiliates who hit volume thresholds, which rewards your best performers without overpaying everyone.
  • Per-product rates. Useful if your margins vary a lot between products and a flat rate would make some sales unprofitable.
  • Recurring commissions. If you sell subscriptions through WooCommerce, decide now whether affiliates earn once or on every renewal, since this materially changes how attractive your program looks to serious affiliates.

Whatever you land on, write it down somewhere concrete before you recruit a single affiliate. Changing rates after people have already built content around your program is one of the fastest ways to burn goodwill.

3. Write terms affiliates will actually read

A short terms page beats a long one nobody opens. Cover the essentials: commission rate, cookie duration, payout schedule and minimum payout threshold, what counts as a valid sale, and what’s explicitly not allowed (bidding on your own brand name in ads, coupon-stuffing browser extensions, or misleading claims about your product are the usual suspects).

This isn’t just legal cover. It’s also the single biggest lever you have over program quality, since affiliates who read clear terms upfront cause far fewer disputes than ones who find out the rules after they’ve already broken one.

4. Prepare promotional materials before affiliates ask for them

New affiliates convert faster when they don’t have to build their own assets from scratch. At minimum, prepare a few banner sizes, some pre-written copy they’re allowed to adapt, and clear product images. If your plugin supports coupon codes tied to individual affiliates, set a few up in advance so your first cohort has something concrete to promote with, not just a bare referral link.

5. Set up fraud protection, not as an afterthought

Fraud detection is the sort of thing that feels unnecessary right up until the week it isn’t. At minimum, make sure your plugin is checking for suspicious patterns like repeated clicks from a single IP, duplicate orders, or signups from flagged locations before your first real payout run, not after.

6. Decide how affiliates will actually see their own performance

Affiliates who can’t see their own clicks, conversions, and pending commissions tend to disengage fast, and they email support instead. A clear affiliate dashboard with real-time numbers does more for retention than almost anything else on this list, since it replaces uncertainty with something an affiliate can check themselves.

7. Recruit a small first group before the public launch

Don’t open applications to the world on day one. Invite a handful of people you already have some relationship with, whether that’s existing customers, people in your niche, or partners you already trust. Let them run for a week or two, fix whatever breaks, and only then open things up more broadly. A soft launch catches the problems a full launch would have made public and permanent.

8. Set a review cadence before you need one

Decide now, not later, how often you’ll check performance: which affiliates are actually driving revenue, which commission tiers need adjusting, and whether your terms are holding up in practice. Weekly during the first month, then monthly once things stabilize, is a reasonable default. Programs that never get reviewed tend to drift, quietly rewarding low performers and under-recognizing the affiliates actually worth keeping.

Get through these eight steps and your launch will look almost boring: no scrambling to fix tracking mid-program, no awkward conversation about a commission rate you regret, no affiliate confused about when they’ll get paid. Boring is exactly what you want a launch to be.
