Private Affiliate Campaigns

AffiliateMarketing Glossary

In affiliate marketing, a private affiliate campaign limits access to a specific offer or set of campaign materials to selected or approved affiliates. Other partners may still belong to the broader program. Campaign access and commission-rate differentiation are separate controls.

How does access differ from a public campaign?

Campaign typeParticipation model
PublicAvailable to the program’s eligible audience under its stated rules
PrivateLimited to selected, invited, or separately approved partners
The platform’s access model determines whether a private campaign is hidden, discoverable but restricted, or available by invitation. Verify the actual behavior rather than assuming that all private campaigns work identically.

Private campaign versus private program

A private campaign restricts one offer within a program. A private program restricts who can join the broader affiliate relationship. An affiliate may participate in public campaigns while remaining ineligible for a specific private campaign.

An illustrative launch pilot

A merchant invites five suitable partners to test a new offer. They receive the approved materials, tracking instructions, and campaign terms. The merchant validates transactions and reviews feedback before expanding participation.

The pilot can limit operational exposure, but it does not guarantee confidentiality or prevent all prohibited promotion. Partners may still share information, and a publicly accessible storefront remains public unless separate controls restrict it.

When is another control more appropriate?

Use a commission group when the goal is a different rate for selected partners. Use campaign access rules when the goal is a different participation set. If the product must be unavailable to unapproved buyers, use appropriate storefront controls as well.

What should be reviewed over time?

Record invitations, approvals, removals, and campaign end dates. Keep compensation and attribution rules clear for transactions near an access change. An administrator should be able to explain both why a partner could participate and which transaction rule applied.

How can a private campaign be operated consistently?

Define access and responsibility

Record who can invite partners, who approves access, and when participation ends. Tell invited affiliates which promotional materials, products, dates, and commission rules apply. Access to a campaign is not permission to use every possible advertising method.

A campaign pilot checklist

  1. Select partners whose audiences suit the offer.
  2. Configure and test the actual invitation or approval model.
  3. Verify links, codes, and commission settings.
  4. Provide the permitted promotional materials.
  5. Review accepted transactions and partner feedback.
  6. Decide whether to expand, revise, or end the campaign.

Post Affiliate Pro’s feature documentation includes private-campaign configuration. Keep participation controls distinct from compensation groups.

What can a private pilot reveal?

A small cohort can expose broken links, unclear messaging, or eligibility rules that partners misunderstand. It cannot establish that the same results will hold for all channels or a wider audience. Use the pilot as evidence for a next test rather than a guaranteed performance forecast.

For creator campaigns, include relevant US endorsement guidance . Invitation-only access does not make a commercial endorsement noncommercial or remove the need for accurate claims.

Use access controls alongside clear partner terms

A private campaign can support a limited product launch, a negotiated partner offer, or a pilot with a selected cohort. Decide who can discover the campaign, who can request access, and who must explicitly approve participation.

Test the experience from an invited and an uninvited affiliate account. Hiding an offer from a campaign list does not necessarily prevent a shared public URL from being opened. If an offer genuinely requires restricted purchasing access, the storefront needs its own appropriate controls.

Specify the campaign’s eligible products, dates, approved promotional channels, and commission settings. A commission group can change rates for selected partners without making an offer private. Keep those choices distinct so affiliates know whether they lack access or simply have different compensation.
