Intercom
Add the Intercom chat widget to your Post Affiliate Pro affiliate panel and public pages. Setup guide with app ID, identity verification and the data shared with Intercom.
Intercom integration
Intercom is a customer service platform with a chat messenger. The Post Affiliate Pro plugin adds that messenger to your affiliate panel and to the public pages of your account, so affiliates can write to your team at the moment a question comes up, for example when they are not sure how to read a report or why a commission looks different than expected.
This is a support integration, not a data synchronization. The plugin does not talk to the Intercom API and does not send any program data. It places Intercom’s chat button on the page, and for a logged-in affiliate it passes their details to the button so your team knows who is writing.
How to integrate PostAffiliatePro with Intercom
Get your Intercom app ID
In your Intercom workspace open Settings > Channels > Messenger > Install and choose the web installation. The code snippet there contains your app ID in the intercomSettings part, for example ekaf07w4. Intercom also calls this the workspace ID, and you can see it in the address of your workspace as well, right after apps/.
Plugin activation
In your merchant panel navigate to Configuration > Plugins > Intercom > Activate. Then fill in the configuration:
- Intercom app_id: the app ID from your Intercom code snippet.
- Identity verification Secret: leave it empty if you do not enforce identity verification in Intercom. Otherwise see the next section.
Save the configuration. The chat button now appears in the affiliate panel and on the public pages of your account.
Identity verification (optional)
Identity verification protects your Intercom workspace from impersonation. When you enforce it in Intercom, every logged-in user has to come with a hash that only your server can create.
If you enforce it, copy the secret from the identity verification step of the Intercom installation settings into the Identity verification Secret field of the plugin. The plugin then creates a user_hash for each logged-in affiliate (a SHA-256 HMAC of the affiliate’s user ID, made with your secret) and sends it with the other details. When both a user ID and an email are sent, Intercom uses the user ID as the identifier.
Intercom currently marks this method as deprecated, although it is still supported, and recommends JSON Web Tokens instead. The plugin supports the user_hash method only, so keep identity verification set up in that way for the plugin.
Test the integration
Log in to the affiliate panel as a test affiliate and check that the chat button appears. Send a test message and make sure it arrives in your Intercom inbox with the affiliate’s name and email.
What is shared with Intercom?
The data depends on whether the visitor is logged in:
| Visitor | Data passed to Intercom |
|---|---|
| Logged-in affiliate | Name, user ID, email address, signup date, and the user hash if you entered the secret |
| Not logged in (for example on the public signup page) | Only your app ID, so Intercom sees an anonymous visitor |
Because personal data of your affiliates goes to a third party, mention Intercom in your privacy policy and review your GDPR obligations if you work with affiliates in the EU.
How does the plugin work exactly?
The plugin adds a small script to the footer of the affiliate panel and of the public pages of your account. The script sets the Intercom settings (your app ID and, for a logged-in affiliate, their details) and loads Intercom’s widget from Intercom’s servers. If no app ID is entered, the plugin adds nothing. The chat button is shown to affiliates and visitors, not in the merchant panel.
What is Intercom?
Intercom is a customer service platform. Its homepage describes it as a complete system for AI and human customer service and says it is trusted by more than 30,000 brands. It combines a helpdesk with an omnichannel inbox and the Fin AI Agent, which answers customer questions.
For an affiliate program, a chat line has a simple benefit. Affiliates who get a quick answer fix a broken link or a tracking question the same day, instead of giving up and moving their traffic elsewhere.
Key features of Intercom
- Helpdesk and inbox: an omnichannel inbox with AI-powered ticketing for your team.
- Fin AI Agent: an AI agent that answers customer questions and is integrated with the helpdesk.
- Copilot: an assistant that works alongside human agents.
- Outbound messages: messages to customers, product tours and onboarding checklists.
- Knowledge Hub: the content that powers Fin, your agents and self-service support.
- Integrations: connections to tools such as Slack, Shopify, GitHub, Stripe and Salesforce.
Intercom pricing options
At the time of writing, Intercom lists the Essential plan at $29 per seat per month, the Advanced plan at $85 and the Expert plan at $132. The Fin AI Agent costs from $0.99 per outcome, and there is a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. Prices change and depend on how you are billed, so check the current numbers on the Intercom pricing page before you decide.
